GENUS
The genus once included all the cactaceae with elongated and ribbed trunk, big or thin, then it was divided into dozens of genus. Plants large, up to fifteen meters high with many branches at a certain height from the ground or up from below. Many with time tend to branch a lot assuming the appearance of a bush.

Caribbean and South America, later naturalized in several countries of Europe, southern Africa and tropical Asia.
